SA: National approach on early childhood needed: SA govt

South Australia's education minister says Australia needs a national approach to early
childhood development.

JANE LOMAX-SMITH says she'll push for the creation of a ministerial council on early
childhood development at a meeting of Australian education ministers in Melbourne next
week.

Ms LOMAX-SMITH says 75 per cent of brain development occurs in the initial five years
of life .. and half of all intellectual and development potential is established by age
four.

She says it's essential to have a single ministerial council to give early childhood
development the attention and priority it requires.
