Vic: Woman leads police on 180kmh car chase

MELBOURNE, Dec 13 AAP - A woman stole a taxi and led police on a 90km-plus chase across
Melbourne last night in which she reached speeds of 180Km/h.

The 23-year-old Endeavour Hills woman is in police custody this morning, after embarking
on the chase from Endeavour Hills in the eastern suburbs to Bacchus Marsh, west of Melbourne.

Police were called to an address in Heatherton Road, Endeavour Hills, shortly before
1am (AEDT) following reports of a woman in a distressed state.

When they arrived the woman stole a taxi while its driver was out of the car and entered
the Monash Freeway, reaching speeds of up to 180Km/h.

Police stopped the pursuit when they decided it was too dangerous but the police air
wing continued to follow the taxi, which was also monitored through the car's GPS system.

The woman continued driving for another hour, slowing to a safe speed as she became
disoriented on the Western Ring Road.

A police night shift van apprehended her when she stopped at a red light in Bacchus
Marsh, at about 2am (AEDT).

The woman is is expected to be charged with theft of a car, dangerous driving and multiple
traffic offences.
