Fed: Labor says F-111s essential to Australia's defence
The federal opposition says scrapping the F-111 strike bombers before their replacementsare ready would leave a hole in Australia's defence.
The F-111s are reaching the end of their life and the government says it's keepingits options open on whether to retire them as part of a review of the Defence CapabilityPlan later this year.
Labor's defence spokesman CHRIS EVANS says Australia's defence will suffer if the F-111sare phased out before the proposed new Joint Strike Fighters are available in 2015.
He says the government has mismanaged the defence budget and is now trying to save costs.
Senator EVANS says the F-111s provide a long range strike capability that other planes don't.
