Fed: NHMRC grants first stem cell licences

A group of Australian scientists will be allowed to use human embryos for IVF research
after the first licences were granted today under controversial stem cell laws.

Tasmanian Senator BRIAN HARRADINE, a strong opponent of the legislation, has described
it as a licence to kill.

Parliament approved stem cell research on excess IVF embryos in 2002 after politicians
were given a rare conscience vote on the issue.

Scientists believe the research could help discover cures for many diseases.

The National Health and Medical Research Council today issued five licences to Melbourne
IVF and Sydney IVF, which will study ways to improve IVF success rates.

The licences are valid until the end of next year.
