WA: Grumpy men take government to court over health subsidies
A Perth men's health group is taking the federal government to court over its failureto subsidize hormone replacement treatment for sufferers of Grumpy Men Syndrome.
Well Men Centre coordinator and founder LINDA BYART says the condition known technicallyas hypergonadism is no laughing matter.
She says it's long-established, it's debilitating and it can have serious consequencesfor men's health and lifestyle.
Symptoms include irritability, snappiness, fatigue, general aches and pains, depressionand loss of interest in sex.
And research indicates that more than a million Australian men suffer from the illness-- most unknowingly.
Ms BYART says the federal government is blatantly discriminating against men by onlyallowing a fraction of sufferers access to subsidies for hormone replacement treatment.
She's initiated a class action against the government alleging sex and age discrimination, and the matter is due to continue in the Federal Court on Monday.
